The Enneagram
The Enneagram personality system—which has ancient origins—is one of the most profound ways of understanding ourselves and others and a powerful tool for individual and cultural transformation. It is so complex and intricate that it can be studied for a lifetime, yet just a brief introductory knowledge of it can be powerful. There are nine main personality types, each with one of three subtypes, creating 27 types. Each type has natural strengths and areas for development. These show up in our day-to-day lives and our relationships with others. They also impact how we are at work, how we lead, and what motivates us in our jobs. The Enneagram can also be applied in a systemic way to assess and change the culture of an organization.
"The discovery of regular patterns in human behavior has meaning only when at the same time the possibility of change and liberation from the pressure of determinacy comes into view. This possibility, I believe, is opened up by the Enneagram."
Richard Rohr
Unlike other systems that categorize people into rigid “boxes”, the Enneagram helps people to move out of their boxes and on a path of development. By understanding our core type, we gain valuable insight into why we think, feel, and act the way we do. This deeper awareness allows us to recognize patterns that may hold us back and begin the journey toward personal transformation.
The Enneagram can improve relationships in friendships, family dynamics, or professional settings. By learning about our tendencies and understanding the perspectives of others, we develop greater empathy and communication skills. Each type approaches life differently, and recognizing these differences can reduce conflict and foster stronger connections. The Enneagram is a valuable tool for leadership and career success. By understanding our leadership style and how we interact with others, we can build more effective teams and create a positive work environment. Organizations integrating the Enneagram into their workplace culture often experience better teamwork, increased motivation, and improved performance. By understanding our enneagram type, we can become clearer about our career motivations and what may be helping and hindering us in achieving our aspirations.
